Unable To Go Past 1024x768 Screen Resolution.

maybe its that i got 64 bit 7? my old vista was 32 bit. all of my drivers are up to date and ive looked around the internet and tried a few different things, but nothings worked. everything looks squished and just all around not good. (laptop btw) its a 16:9 screen, but the resolution slider thing wont go above 1024x768.
